Fairy tales were originally wandering stories without a specific geographic setting. During the 20th century, however, castles such as Sababurg and Trendelburg became widely associated with stories like Sleeping Beauty and Rapunzel, giving these tales a stronger regional identity.

At the same time, legends and historical narratives such as the Pied Piper of Hameln, the Bremen Town Musicians, and the story of Saint Elizabeth of Marburg became part of the cultural themes promoted along the route. This broader interpretation allowed more cities and towns to participate while preserving their own unique heritage and identity.

The expansion from Märchen to Sagen, Legenden, and local stories became an important foundation for the growth of the German Fairy Tale Route. In many ways, it also demonstrates how a shared narrative can help build a larger cultural community.
